I went to the Pumpkin Festival in Half Moon Bay on Saturday. I was pretty excited. I'd heard a lot about the festival and I love all things holiday related. The traffic to get there was insane. Once we got off the San Mateo bridge we sat in bumper to bumper traffic for an hour. I thought there was no way we would be able to find parking with so many cars all going to the same spot but I was wrong. Parking was super easy and conveinant. Ten bucks to park in a grass lot right downtown. Not bad. We were even greeted by a nice animal of sorts. The festival mascot maybe.
The main problem with this festival is that is so damn crowded. You couldn't even walk at a normal pace because everywhere you went it was shoulder to shoulder people. They had a couple more blocks closed off downtown so I am not sure why they don't spread out the tents. It would improve the experience significantly.
They had an app that was really well put together. It had a a map and the schedule of events. Everything was easy to find.
We walked up and down the entire strip and checked out every booth. I love art festivals because it brings out all the bizarre hobbies you never knew people had. Also everyone is so proud of their craft and that's always cool to see. Like this blanket maker. This guy is the king of blankets. He shines at these festivals. "Yeah I made these blankets myself. Feel them, they are very smooth. *places hand on top of her hand and locks eyes* We offer home delivery."
There was a lot of cool stuff. One booth had a frog shirt. I really regret not buying that. Some cool glass stuff that maybe moms would like. There were a couple of booths selling nice cutting boards. The concept of a nice cutting board is odd to me but if you wanted one this festival had em! My favorite was the vintage signs. If I had a backyard shed/garage that I turned into a bar I would have been all over a couple of those.
It doesn't take a genius to figure out the best way to eat these two foods. It was delicious and I've found myself craving the combo a couple times these past two days.
After the ice cream I took an immediate trip to the bathrooms. Porta-Potty row was located in an easy to find and nicely accessible spot. As I walked up I heard a lot of scuttlebutt about how there was no toilet paper left in any of them. That's probably something they should try to have not happen next year. I put my thinking hat on and headed to the porta-potty that was farthest away. Thinking it was probably the least used. Then this kid on a skateboard whipped by me and beat me to the last one so I had to settle for the second to last one. No problem. Tons of toilet paper. Minimal use. Pooped for about ten minutes probably (my body hates ice cream), rubbed some sanitizer on my hands and was good to go. All you can ask for out of festival bathroom situation really.
Didn't do it because the line was out the door and I think it's geared more to little kids. Happy they offer one though!
Not really an attraction per say but they offered it and spin art is awesome so that's plus points.
The petting zoo was a wild scene. It was one kid throwing hay on helpless animals.
Now this is what I came for (kind of serious). Huge Farmer Mike fan. Wish I could get a glimpse into his childhood. A pumpkin carving prodigy. All the other kids were still talking about how gross the pumpkin guts were and trying to clean their hands when Farmer Mike was turning around master pieces.
Worlds Largest Pumpkin
It was cool to see it in person. Absolutely huge pumpkin. The winner was somewhere else and you had to pay 15 dollars to take a picture with it. That's crazier than the the size of the pumpkin! I really wish Cindy Tobeck was there putting on a show like she did at the weigh-off.
I think it's probably the animals in the petting zoo. Shitty day for them. The animal in the grass parking lot wasn't having fun either.
There you have it. The Half Moon Bay Pumpkin Festival in review.
I like the Yankees, watching TV shows and talking about stuff.
