The episode opened with the duel, which was nice of them to not make us wait. Thorne gets the first shot off and it would have killed Delaney if his second in command had put a bullet in the gun. He was paid off by the Company because they can't have Delaney die. Delaney chooses to kill the second in command instead of killing Thorne.
Zilpha is super excited to find out that her abusive asshole husband has not been killed in the duel.
Brace lets Delaney and Lorna know that news of the robbery has spread. They robbed saltpeter from the Royal Navy but it was being stored under East India Companys watch. This was another great plan by Delaney. He gets his saltpeter to make gunpowder and he also gets The Crown and The Company fighting each other.
Lorna and Winter think Delaney is going to hang for the theft. He says the Company can't hang him and the Crown wouldn't hang him, they'd make a deal.
Delaney figures out that he is being followed. He slashes him up real quick and sends him on his way.
Chemist Cholmondeley is working on the gunpowder. Delaney wants updates but all he wants to do is fuck Lorna Bow. Delaney tells him she is off limits. Cholmondeley also requests an assistant. Delaney brings his son (we think) over and has him help.
Lorna brings Horace Delaneys trunk to the house and Brace is straight spooked at the sight of it.
Delaney goes to the docks and the brothel to lay down the law and make sure no one rats to the Crown. He says he knows one person has already thought about ratting then proceeds to cut that mans thumb off. Did he actually know this guy thought about it? Did he just do it to send a message? We don't know but it seems like it is a good warning.
Sir Strange gathers around the Companies table to get ideas on how to bring Delaney down. They have a man hold a hooker at knife point and demand she tell him all about Delaney. Winter sees it, yells for Atticus' men and whoops a daisy, now that guy is dead. Good plan Strange!
James heads down to the river at night. Blows some dust and has a vision of himself dolled up in tribal war paint. He has a premonition about an explosion and heads to the farm to make sure the chemist and his son didn't fuck up.
We get a little emotion from Delaney next. He throws his fathers letters and drawing into the fire and then tells Lorna about his mother. About how his father purchased her and the land for beads and gunpowder and how he then sent his mother off to an insane asylum. He tells this story with tears dripping out of his eyes. In the end he finds what he was looking for; the treaty.
We get to see the gross Prince Regent again. He is eating an ostrich egg and telling Coop to charge the Company with negligence for letting the saltpeter get stolen, this is exactly what Delaney wanted to happen. Coop has a better plan, which brings us a new character.
George Chichester has been writing to The Kings office every July 10th for the last 9 years in an attempt to bring light to the sinking of a ship called The Influence that took the lives of 280 slaves. Most likely the same ship that Delaney has been having visions of. He believes the ship was under a false name at the time and truly belonged to The Company, who sank it on purpose. Coop opens the investigation and Sir Strange freaks the fuck out. Looks like they probably did sink that on purpose.
Delaney visits Dumbarton and they make a deal. Delaney will provide Dumbarton with gunpowder to help the blockade taking place by the Irish. He has 8 days to deliver the powder. Dumbarton has also started to spread a disease amongst the Company and Crown soldiers.
The chemist tells Delaney about using some dangerous element to speed up the process. You can never stop stirring or it blows up. Delaney shrugs and says okay, I'll get you more men.
Thorne Geary hears his wife Zilpha speaking her bothers name in her sleep. He wakes her up and beats her.
Delaney visits Countess Musgrove, AKA Carlsbad, who seems to have no idea about the gunpowder deal Dumbarton made but tells Delaney he must sign the land over to the Americans before he leaves London. Delaney is hesitant because he doesn't trust them.
Geary gets a priest to perform an exorcism on Zilpha. The exorcism consists of him tying her down and feeling her up. It seems as if the exorcism doesn't work because we end on a shot of Zilpha looking like she is going to kill her husband.
Here's What We Learned
We learned once again that James Delaney is smarter than everyone and has great intuition, especially when he is being followed or about to be killed.
We know that The East India Company most likely sank a slave ship on purpose. Maybe for insurance reasons, maybe for some bizarre reasons we don't know. We can also guess that this is the ship Delaney was on. He has had flashback of locking slaves in their quarters. This could have taken place when he was a Company Man and maybe this is where all his original hatred stems from.
We know that the Americans are not on the same page. Carlsbad had no idea about the trade Dumbarton put in place for gunpowder. Maybe they hadn't communicated yet and she was innocently unaware or maybe Dumbarton is up to something on his own. Was Delaney making gunpowder because he knew Dumbarton would be in need soon? Or was he originally making it for his own usage? We don't know. But we do know that he has eight days to make gunpowder and give it to Dumbarton.
We know that Thorne Geary sucks. He's a bad guy who beats his wife and will hopefully be murdered at her hands.
What We Don't Know
What the hell Delaney's end game is?
Not a clue.
