The formula is pretty simple for Gary Sanchez. Get better defensively and do the same thing offensively. Gary led all catchers in runs, home runs, and RBIs. I'd say that's pretty good. His defense tightened up in the postseason. We just need to make sure that's the new normal coming into 2018.
The trouble blocking balls really escalated once we traded for Jaime Garcia and Sonny Gray. Two pitchers with nasty movement who like to spike balls. A young catcher given two new pitchers mid-season wasn't the best combination. And we all know I'm just making excuses for Gary because I love him, but hey, there's some truth to it.
That one post season game when he saw Sonny and Jaime in the same game was crazy. He got put through the wringer and came out relatively clean.
Romine had an interesting 2017. When Gary got hurt in April, he filled in and played really well. In 19 games he hit .316 with a .349 OBP. He even had 4 extra base hits (2 HRs) and 10 RBIs. It was exactly what we needed and I was pretty high on Austin.
The rest of the year was not the same. In the end, he had one of the lowest OPS of any qualified player in the MLB. His ability to throw out runners was nonexistent and his blocking only seemed good because it was being compared to Gary. The last two months of the season Gary was actually doing a better job than Romine. In August and September Gary (43 G) averaged 0.41 PB/WP a game while Romine (21 G) averaged 0.61.
The Brawl made us love Romine though and after all, he is just a backup catcher. My good friend, Greg Bird messaged me to tell me I was a big dumb idiot and that Romine does a lot for the team so I'll stop knocking Austin, I guess.
Higsy had a great year in 2016. Between AA and AAA he hit .276 with a .337 OBP and .847 OPS. Add 21 home runs and 81 RBI's to the mix and he was looking good!
But then came 2017.
When Gary got hurt Higsy got his chance to make a splash in the bigs. I don't think he even created a ripple. In 20 plate appearances, he wasn't able to collect a single hit. Yikes. Not fun.
When sent back to the minors he got the injury bug. Leaving him with only 21 games played in 2017. Hopefully, he is healthy and ready to go in 2018 because the Yankees lack depth at catcher and if Gary or Romine get hurt Higsy will back in the Bronx.
I'm rooting hard for him to get another shot and collect his first hit but also rooting for Gary to never get hurt the rest of his life so it looks like Romine may have to pull a hammy or something (sorry Greg).
I like the Yankees, watching TV shows and talking about stuff.
