For almost three months now we have been reviewing a newly released movie on Six Pack Cinema. We've seen more bad ones than good. Maybe this is because we are bad at picking movies or maybe it's a timing thing. August and September are known as dump months and are usually reserved for movies not entertaining enough to be summer blockbusters but also not good enough to be Emmy nominated. Murder on the Orient was the first movie I went into thinking, 'finally, we are seeing a good movie'.
Was it spectacular? Not really. Was it bad? No, definitely not. I go more in-depth on everything I liked and disliked about it on the podcast. Dave and Sheehan have their takes as well.
My three main takeaways...
1. For a whodunit, it never really had me on the edge of my seat. It's a bit too easy to figure out the ending. That didn't completely ruin it for me though. Instead of the edge of my seat suspenseful movie I had prepared for, I got a nice laid back, relaxed, cozy film. It was still entertaining watching everything play out.
2. The tone and cinematography were the bright spots (you could argue Kenneth Branagh's performance as well). They filmed a lot of the movie with practical effects and on real locations. The landscape shots were beautiful. Then the inside scenes all take place in this small train cabin. To handle that they had to get creative, with dutch angles and aerial shots. It was really fun to look at. My favorite shot was when Branagh was talking on top of the snow fallen train with the sun peaking through the mountains.
3. Johnny Depp needs to play more normal roles. Whenever he's an actual human being it's fantastic.
Secret Number 4. Daisy Ridley needs to be in more movies.
