This weeks episode of Vikings had a battle scene that had me laughing and cheering. Pretty rare for a TV show. Movies have a plethora of great battle scenes because historically they have had much more money to spend and much more production time to get massive battle scenes done. As TV continues to improve in every aspect we are starting to get some more big production battle scenes.
These aren't the battles that I think are the best, they are just the ones that popped into my head, which means they are the ones that I liked enough to store in the forefront of my brain.
For example this weeks Viking wasn't even really a battle. It was the Vikings playing mind games and making the British run back and forth like fools. Eventually leading the British onto a narrow road, in low ground, and setting themselves up perfectly for an attack. There have been many other battles in the shows duration with lots of action and deception but this one stand out because it was fun. Another good Vikings battle is when the English put armies on both sides of the river hoping the Vikings would get off their boats and go to both sides, splitting their forces. When they arrives they saw the armies on both sides and shrugged then just went and fought one side as the other side could just stand there and watch their friends get slaughtered across the river. For conquering the world the British seem to be made fools of fairly often.
Vikings - Prince Aethulwulf Made a Fool
Band of Brothers - Assault on Brecourt Manor
Band of Brothers is my favorite TV Series to ever be made. I watch it once a year. Obviously it has multiple great battle scenes and what makes them even more special is they are historically accurate. This one is my favorite. For some context, they are paratroopers who jsut invaded Normandy in the dark of night. Everyone missed there drop zones. Everyone was lost. The captain of the companies plane crashed, which meant that 1st Lt. Winters was now acting executive officer of Easy company. He arrives at a barn that they are using as headquarters and is told "There's fire along that hedgerow there. Take care of it," that's all he knew. He took 12 men and with him and after arriving found four guns, and company of German soldiers. Not only did they take all the guns Winters also found a German map that had locations of all German guns in the area. Here's some maps to help visualize it.
Game of Thrones - Battle of the Bastards
This is probably the greatest battle in TV history. I remember being edge of the couch, jaw dropped the entire watching. The squeeze technique was something I had never seen or heard of before and it was AWESOME (except that it was the bad guys doing it).
Black Sails - Walrus vs Spanish Ship
Old school ships battling it out at sea is not something you get to see everyday. Seeing the Spanish open up all their canons is the biggest gut punch ever. Can't do anything but sit there and get bombed.
Peaky Blinders - Thomas Shelby vs Billy Kimber
It's not really a battle but god damn is it bad ass. Thomas Shelby is one of the best TV Characters going. I don't think anyone saw what happens coming.
The scene from Spartacus where they stack dead bodies to make a bridge, then during the battle they surprise the Romans with draw bridges, that was pretty cool.
Not a battle scene but in Marco Polo when they knock down the walled city or the flashback to Genghis burning down a village by lighting birds on fire and having them fly home.
If Walter White wiping out the nazi's at the end of Breaking Bad counts then throw that in there as well.
Alright time to tell me which ones I forgot about? There are a lot of great fight scenes out there but I was trying to stick to battles. Either way I must have forgotten a bunch. Let me know.
I like the Yankees, watching TV shows and talking about stuff.
