Okay lets get into it. We open up and get a shot clock. Sir Strange, the Head of the East India Company in London gives his subordinate Cholmondeley an ultimatum, either Delaney is dead in the next two days or his ass is fired.
Delaney then sets up his defenses. He gives Bryce a gun, puts his jewels in a safe and declares he will only be drinking from sealed containers.
Then we got o a burning candle auction. I'd never heard of a burning candle auction and I was excited to watch one go down. The rules were that when the wick burns out whoever has the last offer one the table wins. That sounded very exciting. People fighting the flame to get their offer in. Well it didn't go down like that. Delaney made his offer for the ship and then no one countered and the auctioneer manually put the flame out. Boring. But yeah, Delaney purchased a ship under the name of a new trading company. This new found money and purchase leads Sir Strange to believe that Delaney had been bought or bribed by "THE FUCKING AMERICANS"
Delaney is up a ship but down a horse. Where his horse was is now a note with a name on it. Atticus. A burly man holding a butchers knife and covered in blood walks onto the screen and it's Al Capone! I love this actor.
Atticus is an interesting guy. He sailed with Delaneys father and he is who you go to when you want someone killed. Someone came to him in an attempt to have James' father murdered but Atticus, being a dear friend and great guy refused to do it. He took the horse as payment for not killing his father. Atticus is also writing a book about the world and is dying to know what the largest and smallest thing Delaney saw in Africa was. Delaney tells him the smallest thing he saw was human kindness, then changes his answer to ants. In the end Atticus and Delaney are friends, not rivals and Delaney has recruited Atticus to be his eyes and ears. Atticus says, with the enemies you're staring at you're going to need me.
Next we stop by the Prince Regents headquarters. Prince Regent was the son of King George III. At this time the King was ill and couldn't rule so his son ruled as Regent. His advisor, Solomon Coop lets him know of a blockade taking place by the Americans. The Prince doesn't have time for this shit. He just wants to crush them. He says fuck the Americans and fuck the East India Company as well.
Delaney runs into a girl who tells him that Helga hired a silver toothed man to have him killed. The girls name is Winter, she is 15, lives in the whore house but says she is too ugly to be a whore. She takes Delaney to the silver toothed mans ship. Delaney swims, climbs aboard, finds no one, burns the ship down then swims away to find Winter has vanished. Was she just a vision? He has tons of visions. It seems even he isn't sure.
He finds Helga, interrupts her taking care of a client and asks about Winter. She denies knowing such a girl. He takes her wig off and says something about seeing the real her. Tells her that Winter looked like her and he think she is her daughter. Helga doesn't deny this. He then recruits Helga to be his eyes and ears as well. Quite the team he is putting together.
Okay the next scene is a doozy. Delaney gets on the ship he purchased at auction. Finds slave quarters. Burns some stuff. Gets naked. Cries. Chants. Has visions. Chains himself down and falls asleep. Hey, maybe this dude is fucking crazy!
Then it's off to see another new character. An american spy named Dumbarton. Dumbarton doesn't trust Delaney because he says he is crazy and instead of calming this suspicion Delaney simply agrees with him, "yes, I am crazy."
Delaney sends his sister some jewels. Awww he still loves her.
He visits his Lawyer, Thoyt and tells him he is a whore for the East India Company and that he knows he has been telling his family secrets to them for years.
At the courthouse they have a public hearing to go over Father Delaneys will. His dock workers are there as well has Zilpha and her husband. Sucks for all of them because Father Delaney gave everything he had to his son and nothing to anyone else. The employees start yelling and crying. Delaney pays them out one by one. Zilphas husband reminds us all that he is a bad guy. He tells Delaney that this inheritance will be the end of him. We also find out from Atticus that is was Geary who came to him in a plea to have the old man killed.
Just as things have settled in the courtroom in strolls a red head in curls. She says she is Father Delaneys wife, now widow and that she is owed everything. Thoyt and James ask her questions to try and debunk the claim but she has all the answers. Tricky situation!
Delaney asks his sister who he loves to run away with him. She says nah.
In the very last scene Delaney gets in a knife fight with the silver toothed man. He kills him but he gets stabbed in the process, which leads to more visions of Africa.
If it isn't Tom Hardy in this role I'm not sure this show is any good. Both episodes have basically been Tom Hardy power strutting around, talking to different people and being awesome in a grunty and mysterious way. This are moving. I like the characters they introduced in this episode. Atticus and Dumbarton seem like they are going to play big roles and help Team Delaney win big.
We're in a weird race to see who Delaney fucks first, his sister, his step mother or the whore house owner. Win, win, win I guess?
Was Winter a vision? I have no idea. My guts says no because I don't want her to be. She would be another great addition to the team.
Geary's death scene is going to be great. I think his wife, Zilpha will do the killing. That would be satisfying.
Is the Lorna, the wife of Father Delaney a plant. The East India Company is sure happy she has arrived so they can use her to their advantage. I wouldn't put it past Sir Strange to have hired her and sent her there in the first place.
I'm gonna go down a reddit rabbit hole later on and find some theories. If I find anything good I'll update this.
