SAN JOSE -- Ray Minter calls the northbound Interstate 680 offramp at Jackson Avenue a "landing strip" because of the long, straight stretch of roadway aimed almost directly at his house.
And over the years, nearly two-dozen cars, trucks and SUVs have landed on his property, with four of them smashing into the single-story house.
Monday night, it happened again, this time involving a truck that came flying off the offramp and slammed into the house he's lived in for 56 years.
"I was in the back of the house and it started shaking,' said Minter, 61, adding he first thought was, "Oh man, is it an earthquake? Then it sounded like an accident."
Monday night's episode marked the third time one of his family's cars has been destroyed by someone crashing onto their property.
"You look at it, one neighborhood isn't any better than the other," Minter said ."There go there's no real crime around where we live. You may have another problem" in another neighborhood.
"Here we have cars."
Yo man, you should move. Look at that damage. That has happened to that extent four times!? And something very close to that has happened over two dozen? I don't see any scenario where that happens a second time and you don't pack up and move right away. The first time, yeah, that was scary, a fluke accident in your front yard. The second time, hey hunny maybe we should move to another spot. Third time you gotta bolt. 4th-25th times you're just enjoying it now.
Feel like he should just walk to the local EMT station and be like, hey guys, maybe we just switch spots? I've got injuries showing up at my house regularly and if you set up shop there it would cancel all the sirens and rushing around.
What happens when he has quests over?
"Alright so this is the kitchen, here's the TV room, here's the front living room but we don't go in there?"
"Huh? why's that?"
"Oh it's nothing big, we just tend to avoid it because we don't want to get hit by a car."
The first time I read this I thought he lived under an overpass and these cars were skidding out on the turn, flipping over the guard rail and landing on his yard/house as if falling from the sky. Then I looked at the map.
It's just a normal fucking off ramp. Literally just a long off ramp with a light at the end. Cars can turn left, go straight, or go right. But for some reason this is a hot spot for people to bomb the light and drive directly into a house? It's not like they're asleep at the wheel because two seconds ago they had the wherewithal to get off the exit. Bizarre. This dude is building walls and installing poles in front of his house because of this. Just a normal off ramp?
Either way, the amount of money and time this guy has put into protecting his house is stupid. Between damages and defenses he's thrown out a lot of money, when he could just move. At least build a moat. Holy shit thats what this guy needs to do. Build a moat. I'm going to write him a letter suggesting it immediately. This blog just got me so excited and I did not see that coming. I love writing letters.
Update: Letter sent.
