Had my good buddy Evan, help me put together a list of our top ten McConaughey movies.
Jimmys list is in blue.
Evans is in green.
This movie isn't that good but has a ton of McConaughey in it, which means it's actually amazing. Sidekick Steve Zahn really tickles me.
Free State of Jones
I haven't seen this yet but no doubt in my mind I'll like it. I love history. I love the civil war. I LOVE Keri Russell. Matts gonna crush it. His teeth look horrible in the trailer so you know he's not just mailing this one in.
This movies got everything I like. It's a coming of age story that includes a secret hide out, McConaughey and Reese. It's also a perfect role for him to play. The mysterious charming guy who oozes cool and danger at the same time.
The Ghosts of Girlfriends Past
'A Christmas Carol' meets rom-com. Have to love bad boy MM in this one. Michael Douglas plays the perfect creepy ghost uncle, and Jennifer Garner makes a great leading lady. I would rate it higher but I like my rom-coms to be a little more plausible.
Dallas Buyers Club
This isn't a movie I'm going to sit down and watch over and over again so it's not too high on my list but surely it's fantastic. McConaughey crushes the role so much he won best actor for it. Made AIDS look more bad ass than Magic Johnson did and thats a big feat.
How To Lose A Guy in 10 Days
Fun movie, pretty much his coming out party where hollywood realized if he can contain his weird he's the perfect rom com actor. .... I actually can't think of anything else to say about this movie and basically am realizing right now it should probably be lower on my list. Fuck.
The majority of people who have seen this movie will tell you that it's horrible, and those people take life too seriously and probably aren't a lot of fun at the bar. McConaughey plays a lovable treasure hunter in search for sunken loot and the love of his ex-wife, Kate Hudson. Kevin Hart is also in it. Hopefully you don't need anything else to be convinced, because there is literally nothing else.
Failure to Launch
This is the same exact movie as How To Lose a Guy but with a better cast (sans SJP, she sucks). You got Bradley Cooper, Zooey Deschanel, Kathy Bates, the dude from National Treasure, and Terry Bradshaw. The main difference is that McConaughey's role actually has some depth with the dead fiancée plot. Also it's a tad more com then rom IMO.
Failure to Launch
This one is tough. McConaughey acts his b*tt off, and his supporting cast is remarkable. Terry Bradshaw, Kathy Bates, Zooey D, and Bradley Cooper really keep the laughs rolling in. The problem is that I don't think much of Sarah Jessica Parker and it's near impossible to imagine Adonis McConaughey falling for her like he does. Now, if Kate Hudson were the leading lady instead...
This came out before Dallas Buyers Club and I remember being shocked while watching the first episode. Is this really McConaughey? Why's he doing such a good job? Matt can crush actual crazy hard roles now? This is heavy shit.
Also not a movie, and I don't care. I don't watch many shows but this one gripped you from the start. It was appointment television. McConaughey plays this role scary good. Kinda like the character from the Lincoln commercials after 10 years and 5,000 beers.
How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days
I fell in love with Matthew as a result of his rom-com work. This is my favorite one, so the top 3 ranking is a bit or a formality. Kate Hudson and Matthew have a great on-screen chemistry, and you can't help but root for everything between them to work out! I won't spoil it for you!
A Time to Kill
I kinda grew up watching this movie. One of those movies you catch when your young and then whenever it pops up on TV you just watch cause its familiar. Its before Matt and Sandra Bullock fell into the ten year trap of easy rom coms and they both have really good performances. If you haven't seen this go watch it. Matt and Sandra are sweaty the entire movie, which had to suck while filming.
Dazed and Confused
If this isn't Evans number one pick then I'll be upset. Never has a role been hit out of the park as far as this one. Crazy thing is he wasn't even trying to be an actor. Asked Richard Linklater if he could help out on set and Linklater was like hey I think I have a role for you and boom he becomes a big time actor with an awesome catch phrase. Dazed and Confused is also in my top ten movies of all time. I like it so much I get sad while watching it.
Dazed and Confused
Probably the greatest movie from the last 3,000 years. Clearly, I'm a sucker for coming of age movies, but this one has it all. It's a timeless classic with a perfect soundtrack and amazing actors portraying characters we can all remember from high school. McConaughey plays the coolest (read: creepiest) and most memorable of them all. If you haven't watched this movie yet, it'd be a lot cooler if you did.
I like the Yankees, watching TV shows and talking about stuff.
