I love this show. If you would have told people after season 1 that by season 4 we were watching the demise of Ragnar they would be so disappointed. Somehow it is working perfectly though. Down and out Ragner in this past episode came with a lot of the old witty and playful Ragnar.
It's pretty tough to see Ragnar like this. He was the peoples champ. Smartest and most cunning dude in Kattegat. Now he's a beggar King. Handing out gold like Oprah just to get people to row his boat. His relationship with Ivar is really fun to watch though. Ragnar has his childlike ways of teasing someone and them knowing it is all out of love. Every else calls Ivar a cripple and he's ready to kill them. Ragnar calls him a cripple and it's just his dad showing him affection.
Whats the slave girl up to? She's so frightened of Ivar that she runs and does the one thing he warns her not to do? That doesn't seem like fear to me it seems like a plan of sorts to pit the brothers against each other. It was a nice moment between Sigur (the blonde hair mole rat looking one) and Ubbe (the oldest of the Aslaug sons) when Sigur said "she's afraid of Ivar" and Ubbe said "so am I". It was a little way of showing us that Sigur is dumb and naive and that Ubbe knows the warning signs that Ivar is showing. Kind of parrallels between Rollo and Ragnar.
While I hate Aslaug and will be Team Lagertha for life it does seem a little contrived that Lagertha is now coming after her. It's been like twenty years. Ragnar is rowing to his death and her son Bjorn will soon be King yet she wants to fight Aslaug now? Also Ragnar made me rethink my blind hate for Aslaug for a second with his apology to her. She really has held down the fort and kept Ragnar in a good light in his sons eyes. She could have easily raised them to hate him with a deep passion. Some points to Aslaug there but I still don't like her.
Like I said, Ragnar is rowing to his death right now. Did you see that crew he assembled?
Ummmm YIKES! One dude even forgot to bring his oar.
Ivar is probably the most able bodied dude on that ship! I don't see Rangar making it out of this season. He's probably going to die in England and they spare the cripple so he can go back to Kattagat and spread the word. Then Ivar gets all mad and starts running shit.
I think they have done such a good job with the sons and Bjorn that the show will still be great without Ragnar. I say they, but Vikings is written by one guy. That's insane. It takes a team of people to write some shows and Michael Hirst is out here pumping out episodes all by himself. Great character development.
I like the Yankees, watching TV shows and talking about stuff.
