A Win is A Win is A Win
That was a wild game. A scary game. A game that felt destined to end in a loss at times. But no. At the end the Yankees were shaking hands on the field and the series was won. Phew.
Girardi is managing these games much different. In his post game interview he was even asked if he makes the same moves he made today on June 13th and he said no, absolutely not. It's win at all costs time. It's hurt pitchers feelings time. Let's go through each risky decision that was made today.
Taking Out Jaime
Jaime Garcia looked sharp today. He threw 4.2 innings of 1 run ball and kept his pitch count relatively low. If this was April or June he would have stayed in that game. No doubt about it. It's not April though, it's September and the Yanks are in a pennant race. I agreed with this move 100 percent. Jaime looked sharp but he has struggled going a third time through a lineup this season. He hadn't pitched in a while, and Evan Longoria was in the box, representing the tying run.
If Longoria is going to beat you, you better make sure he's beating your best. Our best is a fresh Chad Green. Longoria flied out. The inning ended without any damage. Joe's move worked.
In the post game Jaime and Joe both had great quotes about this move. Garcia said, "that's human nature, we never want to come out of the game, but at the end of the day, when I get to the dugout it's all about the team and it worked out".
And Joe said, "I was happy he didn't want to come out, that's a good thing".
Taking out Chad and Going to Kahnle
This move I was not in favor of when it happened. Chad Green has shown he has the ability to go multiple innings. It's what makes him such great weapon for us. Swiss army man. He'll come in with runners on and get out of a jam then give you two more dominating innings afterwards. I would have left Chad in.
Joe plans this shit out though. He said he only planned on pitching Chad one inning today max so when he went 1.1 it already felt like he pushed him more than he wanted to. These pre made plans seem crazy to me. Preparation is key to completing any task though, so I can't fully knock it.
Kahnle didn't look incredibly sharp but he was helped out by a double play turned nicely by Chase Headley. In the end, this move worked. Chad stays a little more fresh now. Kahnle got the job done and keeps building the confidence. I didn't agree with it at the time but can't knock it now. It worked.
Not Pinch Hitting Romine
Bases loaded in the 8th inning of a two run game. If there is ever a time you need some extra runs, that's it. If you have the worst hitter on your team in the box I think maybe, probably, definitely, you tap that guy on the shoulder and tell him to take a seat. Put Holliday in. Put Judge in. Put Tyler Austin in. Didn't Holliday and Austin just come through for you in big pinch hit spots 3 days ago? C'mon Joe!
Now the flip side of this coin is that Betances and Chapman aren't the easiest to catch. If you make the move and put Kratz behind the dish you better be sure he can handle the pitches coming at him. That's the only logicial reason for keeping Romine in the game. For me, it's not big enough. If that is the sole reason Romine stayed in then it's time to get old man Kratzy to the bullpen to catch some Dellin and Aroldis sessions.
In the end, it didn't work because Romine struck out and didn't get a run in but it didn't not work because we won the game without needing the extra runs.
Taking Out Betances in the 8th
I have LONG said the when Dellin looks like he has no control you take him the fuck out of that game. And do it fast. If it wasn't for the incompetence of Angel Hernandez, Lucas Duda, the lead off batter would have been on first base with a walk. I mean look at this 3-1 pitch Hernandez called a ball.
Thanks for the help Angel! The next pitch Duda lifted to right center for an out but I think the seed was put in Joes head right there. That would have been a lead off walk. If Dellin is off, you don't mess around. Joe got Chapman up in the pen right then and there. The next batter, Longoria hits a single. Now Joe has his mind made. He can't trust Dellin. He sends Larry out there to talk to Dellin and buy some time. Then Dellin gets one more batter as Chapman finishes warming up.
It didn't matter that Betances struck Morison out with a nice curve ball. The decision was already made.
That's the thought process behind it. At the time I understood it and somewhat agreed. Dellin wasn't sharp with the first two batters and that has led to some terrible outcomes in the past.
Unfortunately Chapman came in and wasn't sharp himself. Chappy walks his first batter then gives up a single to that asshole Hechavarria. The Rays get a run and the decision backfires on Joe. Does this mean Dellin would have gotten the job done? No. But it lends credence to it being a bad move.
In this entire series we scored runs in 3 innings. 3 games. 27 innings. We only scored in 3 of them. In a demented way it's actually impressive we won the series in such a way.
They did get a lot of hits and a lot of men on base though. They also added Chris Archer to the list. I enjoyed that a lot. I hate watching Chris Archer pitch. If he was a little leaguer on a team I coached he'd be my worst nightmare. The biggest "DO YOU SEE WHATS HAPPENING TO ME? FEEL BAD FOR ME!" kid of all time.
Baltimore's pitching should be just what we need to get the bats really going. Those guys are horrible.
The Fun Stuff
Castro asking for the ball to commemorate breaking his 0/14 slide.
Todd and Tony with a great synchronized and memorized hand shake.
Todd shouting out thumbs down guy.
#CHASECARES Great clapping to fist pump combo. That fist pump has my heart pumping extra fast every time I see that bad boy clench.
Fabulous finger guns and clap combo here. Gary is the originator of the guns and it shows. A true finger gun pro.
I like the Yankees, watching TV shows and talking about stuff.
